Photography on display in Putnam

PALAKTA – More than 60 photography students from Palatka High School get to show off their work beginning with a gallery reception tonight (Feb. 5) at the Larimer Arts Center in Palatka.

The Arts Council of Greater Palatka Inc. holds a gallery reception at 5:30 p.m. that’s open to the public. On hand will be teacher Kimberly Walther’s students and their family and friends.

The students’ artwork will be on public display, and the artists may sell their artwork. “Hopefully, publicity …  will be an incentive for the students to do their best work to present in the gallery setting,” says Evelyn Snyder, Gallery curator.

The Larimer Arts Center is located at 216 Reid St., Palatka. The gallery show is free and open to the public and can be viewed until Feb. 11 during regular Center hours of 10 a.m-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and during special event hours.”

Students will also compete in the Putnam County Fair Fine Arts Division in March, where their artwork will be on display for public viewing all week. They have the opportunity to earn award ribbons and cash prizes at this event.

After the fair, students will compete in Arts Council of Greater Palatka’s 22nd All-County Student Art Show held at the Larimer Art Center in April, where their artwork again will be on display for public viewing all month along with all the other county schools art class work.

This event could give them exposure for the students and their artwork on the Larimer Arts Center and Arts Council of Greater Palatka web pages, as well as highlights on the Putnam Schools and Palatka High School web page. An awards breakfast for winners and prizes in each school division is planned.

This year’s goal for the photography students is to improve their photography, produce artwork worthy of publication, and for them to produce quality material for their portfolios. Students have brag boards in their classroom featuring their name and “Published Photographer” along with examples of their work that has been published this year.
