Members’ only events at Lighthouse

A Members’ Only Dark of the Moon event begins at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Ju ne 13, at the St. Augustine Light Station. A few spaces remain.

  • Also upcoming is the Skipjack Launch Celebration Thursday, July 13, at the boat ramp. The christening is at 5:30 p.m., with the launch at 6 p.m.

First built and used by commercial shad fishermen on the St. Johns River, the Florida Skipjack dominated the St. Johns shad fishery and became one of the most common type of small sailing craft in Northeast Florida.  Volunteer boatbuilders have just completed this project to give us a working example of the watercraft commonly seen on our local waterways.

Other members’ only events upcoming include:

A lecture with Capt. Thomas G. Anderson, Ph.D., M.D., US Navy, ret. at 7 p.m. July 13. Topic is “Maritime Commerce and the Origins of Globalization.”

A performance by The Storytelling Sims at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17. Topic is “Holding Down the Homefront Florida During World War II.”

Wayne and Jan Sims will entertain us with tales of submarines, shortages, saboteurs and War Bond Drives during the 1942 U.S. mobilization.
