wild canna

By KEITH FULLER

Q:   I saw some plants growing in a ditch that looked like cannas but the flowers were yellow. I have red ones in my yard. Could these have been a type of canna and can I grow them?

A:    The wild canna that grows here does have a yellow flower. You can grow them in a landscape. They grow best where there is plenty of moisture.

Q:    I planted some alstromeria last spring and it has not flowered. What can I do to make it bloom?

A:    Alstromeria, also known as Lily of Peru, blooms in early summer. It would not have flowered in the first year but you should get flowers in the months to come.
