MSU Don’s Friends At COA

LENDING A HAND

Eight college students from Michigan State University are here in St. Augustine this first week of January  for an alternative winter break project co-sponsored by Don Ausman Foundation and Council on Aging. The Don Ausman Foundation raises funds to support the Alternative Spring Break.

Jim and Renee Wauldron began this program in memory of their son, Don, a former MSU student who was known for his altruistic work during his college breaks. “Don’s Friends” are students who volunteer on school breaks “Having FUN…Helping Others.”  Council on Aging coordinates projects connecting volunteers and seniors in need. This week’s projects include constructing wheel chair ramps and basic lawn care for seniors who would otherwise be unable to do the work themselves.

SENIORS EXPO

If you wish to remain healthy and active while preparing for your golden years you won’t want to miss the Active Boomers & Seniors Expo, a Lifestyle, Health & Active Aging event Saturday, March 4  from 9:30a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the St. Augustine Outlets Mall in St. Augustine.

Featured at the Expo is ‘Treasures from the Attic’ Antique Appraisal, a fundraiser for St. Johns County Council on Aging. The appraisal features many local appraisers and antique experts from St. Johns County. People bring their antiques and collectibles and get a verbal approximation of value. It’s patterned after the popular PBS television show “Antiques Roadshow.”

Treasures from the Attic is an exciting event that draws generations together. Seniors bring special things they have grown up with and younger generations bring items handed down from parents, grandparents and great grandparents.   Last year’s event was very successful, with many people turning out to see if they had valuable antiques or simply lovable curiosities in their homes.
