Putnam Kicks Off One Book Event

Florida House of Representatives Bobby Payne (Dist. 19) was a perfect choice to introduce Dr. Michael Warren, guest speaker at the kick off for this year’s One Book One Putnam. Payne and Warren are cousins. Warren is director of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Laboratory at the University of Florida.

PALATKA – Putnam County readers ushered in the 13th annual One Book One Putnam with a Jan. 12 reception at the Palatka Municipal Golf Course clubhouse. Since it’s the 13th the choice is appropriate — City of Bones by New York Times best-selling author Michael Connelly. It features Harry Bosch, Connelly’s private detective creation.

Highlight of the evening was a skeleton displayed by Dr. Michael Warren, head of the C.A. Pound Human Identification Lab at the University of Florida. Warren and a graduate of Palatka High School. He is s also an associate professor of forensic anthropology at UF.

Over the next two months libraries throughout Putnam will be hosting discussions on City of Bones.

The schedule includes:

Jan. 26, 6 p.m., Headquarters library in Palatka. Special guest Diana Latta is a Putnam County teacher who has taught courses in forensics.

Jan. 31, 6:30 p.m., Bostwick Public Library. Special guest Chip Liabl.

Feb. 8, 10 a.m., Melrose Library

Feb. 8, noon, Crescent City Library. Lunch with the Greats

Feb. 16, 6 p.m., Interlachen Library.

The finale event is Feb. 23 with special guest St. Johns County Cold Case Detective Howard “Skip” Cole. Cole will be talking about his work and how it compares to the fictional accounts in the Harry Bosch series. The finale is at the GFWC Woman’s Club of Palatka, 600 S. 13th St., Palatka. Light refreshments will be provided.

One Book One Putnam has hosted book reads since 2005 when the series kicked off with Patrick Smith’s A Land Remembered. OBOP is designed to encourage the pleasure of reading.

Among those attending the One Book One Putnam kick-off at the Palatka Municipal Golf Course club house Thursday were Sheriff Gator DeLoach, Margie Payne, Bobby Payne and Putnam County Commissioner Chip Laibl.

One Book One Putnam committee members including Joyce Oliver, Lulu Gail Griffis, Putnam County Library Director Steve Crowley and Andrea Gillean greeted people at the kick-off Thursday (Jan. 12) for this year’s read. Book chosen is City of Bones by Michael Connelly.

Part of every success get-together is good food. Palatka Sunrise Rotary Club helped make it happen this time. Member Yvonne Parrish got a surprise rendition of “Happy Birthday” from the crowd.
