Interactive performance slated

SAINT AUGUSTINE — The Crisp-Ellert Art Museum will host an interactive performance June 2 -4, where visitors will find themselves amongst the performers as story of lives lived, loves lost and dreams delayed are told through memories, music and song.

The performance, titled “Alumni Project — A Visit to Spoon River,” will feature alumni Jennifer Latka and Harold George and will debut on the night of the June Art Walk in downtown St. Augustine. The three performances will take place on Friday, June 2 at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 3 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 4 at 2 p.m. Reservations are not required and the event is free and open to the public.

The performance is inspired by and adapted from Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology. First published in 1915, the original work has been adapted into full-length plays, radio productions, operatic works, stage musicals and even a work for baritone and accordion.

Latka and George had discussed for some time the idea of working on a non-traditional and collaborative theatre project, and found themselves motivated by the Oscar acceptance speech of actress Viola Davis: “There’s one place where all the people with the greatest potential are gathered, and that’s the graveyard…I say exhume those stories, the stories of the people who dreamed big…”  It was then that they knew that Spoon River would be their inspiration.

Attendees of “Alumni Project” will see familiar faces from the local theatre scene, as well as many newcomers. This performance is a fully collaborative project between all the players, as several individuals have adapted pieces or created original works based upon the anthology, as well as brought seasoned musical talent to the project.
