Seminole War commemoration Aug. 12

Ximenez-Fatio House joining in the commemoration

SAINT AUGUSTINE – The Ximenez-Fatio House and the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Florida (NSCDA-FL) will participate in the 10th Annual Seminole War Commemoration event on Saturday, Aug. 12 from 2:15 – 4:30 p.m. , 20 Aviles St., in downtown St. Augustine. Activities at the historic property will feature free admission for St. Johns County residents and event re-enactors and participants. The Ximenez-Fatio House will present its exhibits and displays including one of the rooms that serves as an interpretation of the Seminole War period, specific to a war officer who may have been a guest at the fine boarding house establishment.

During event times, a living history workshop will be featured with Steve Rinck from the Seminole Wars Foundation along with a display of Osceola’s death mask. Osceola (1804 – January 30, 18 38) was born as Billy Powell and became an influential leader of the Seminole in Florida . After Osceola’s death, army doctor Frederick Weedon was permitted by the Seminole to make a death mask of Osceola’s face and head which was a European-American custom at the time for prominent people.

The event is hosted by the House Museum and Convocation of Seminole War Historians in St. Augustine as a heritage event with a myriad of experts from Seminole Wars Foundations and West Point Society of North Florida .
