PALATKA – Local photographer, Brian Keith’s photography will fill the galleries in the Arts Council of Greater Palatka’s show for July. Located at 216 Reid St, in the historic Larimer Arts Center, the opening reception will be held Friday, July 7th, from, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Gallery Chair Evelyn Snyder says “we are looking forward to this exhibit of outstanding photography”.
Keith was bitten by the photography bug as a child, taking family photos and scenes with a Kodak Brownie camera. In the 1970’s he wandered into Jack Massey Photo Supply (or as Jack would pronounce it Photo (Sooply) and got instruction on a 35 mm rental camera. Brian would take concert photos, portraits and landscapes, his greatest love was photographing old buildings.
In the late 70’s, he began doing commercial photography for business openings and real estate.
In the early 80’s Brian began a career in law enforcement and expanded to crime scene photography, attending the FBI Photography School.
Former local Newspaper man, Bob Britt, expanded Brian’s photographic education into developing and the use of early model cameras like Bob’s Crown Graphic bellows camera, which Brian still owns today as a reminder of that friendship.
Master Photographer and family friend, Art Smiley, as well as local photographer Tom Deputy continue to be mentors and strong influences in Brian’s passion for photography. Brian brings his cameras to most local St. John’s River State College Athletic events, as well as many local events and charitable functions. Evelyn Snyder, Gallery Chairman says, “You may even see someone you know on the Gallery walls during Brian’s show, or become a new subject!”
Brian is the Facility Manager at Newcastle Shipyards in Palatka, is on the Board of St. John’s River State College, Careersource Northeast Florida, Putnam County Chamber of Commerce and Children’s Reading Center Charter School. He is married to Alice MacGibbon Keith and has five children and five grandchildren.
