SAINT AUGUSTINE – St. Anastasia Catholic Church will open its 2017-18 concert series with RSCM St. Augustine Day, a day of music, food and fun on Saturday, Sept. 16. Adult and youth singers from central and northeast Florida are invited to participate in the workshop which will be led by internationally acclaimed musician Andrew Walker.

The all-day event, sponsored by RSCM American affiliate member, St. Anastasia Catholic Church, begins at 9:30 a.m. and concludes with a concert service at 6 p.m.  RSCM’s focus is on uplifting the spiritual life of communities through high quality choral music. The Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) America is the USA branch of the British based RSCM, an international ecumenical organization with more than 11,000 affiliates worldwide

Walker is an internationally known choral director, composer, organist and teacher and an accomplished clinician, conductor and songwriter. He is director of music at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Orlando and the founder and director of the 40 voice national touring RSCM Choir.   He is the past-President of RSCM America and is being honored this year as a named Honorary Associate of the RSCM (international.)

Peter Morin, director of music at St. Anastasia Catholic Church said the day of music offers a chance for adult and youth singers to come together to rehearse and have some fun under the direction of Walker.

With early registered participants numbering over 70, Morin thinks that number will grow closer to one hundred.

“Participants already registered are from Orlando to Jacksonville, from Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic church choirs as well as members of the St. Augustine Community Chorus,” he noted.

“There has been a great deal of local support from Ray McDonald, Director of Music at Memorial Presbyterian Church and Mike Sanflippo, conductor, St. Augustine Community Chorus and Director of Music at Grace Methodist,” Morin added.

The RSCM  St. Augustine Day will begin with a light breakfast social, rehearsals, lunch, afternoon rehearsal and activities leading up to a closing 6 p.m. service which is open to the public.

“Everyone who loves to sing is welcome to register and join in the daytime music making,” Morin said.   The registration deadline is September 1 and the $40 registration fee includes food.  For registration and other information, contact Peter Morin at staccmusic@aol.com.

RSCM St. Augustine Day will conclude with  “Choral Concert:  From Death to Life,” a sacred concert of anthems, hymns and readings joyfully proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus Christ, starting at 6 p.m.  A light reception will follow and a free-will collection will be taken to help offset the expenses of the day.

St. Anastasia Catholic Church is located at 5205 A1A South.  Parking is free. Call 471-5364 for information.
