Museum Day Live is Sept. 23

Ximenez-Fatio House will be one location for the Seminole War Convocation.

SAINT AUGUSTINE – The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, 20 Aviles St., will open its doors free of charge when visitors participate with tickets from Smithsonian Magazine’s 13th Annual Museum Day Live! on Saturday, Sept. 23.

Museum Day Live! offers free admission to visitors presenting tickets at a participating museum or cultural institution. The event represents Smithsonian’s commitment to learning and the sharing of knowledge accessible to everyone, giving museums across all 50 states the opportunity to follow the admission policy of the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. According to event organizers, the one-day event attracts hundreds of thousands of participants.

“Visitors and locals are encouraged to join us for free tours of the House, Museum, gift shop and property,” said Julie Vaill-Gatlin, executive director of the Ximenez-Fatio House. “The national program will provide individuals and families with the opportunity to learn more about our local history,” she said. Ximenez-Fatio House and Museum participation is part of its mission to support public outreach which promotes the nation’s national heritage through preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects. For more information, call the Museum at 904-342-8887.

The historic Ximenez-Fatio House structures and grounds were built in 1798 by Andres Ximenez, a Spanish storekeeper. For example, the original portion of the Ximenez-Fatio House includes a coquina house and the detached kitchen which became a tavern, private residence and later a fine boarding house for military officers, sea captains, dignitaries and families from the north and south.

The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tours of the buildings and rooms are available from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and closed on Sundays and Mondays. The property is available for group functions including weddings and events. During tours, regular admission is free for St. Johns County residents; adults $10; children, students, seniors and military $8, and the family rate is $20. Private group rates are $6.50 per person.

The Ximenez-Fatio House is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the Historic American Buildings Survey. It is a Florida Heritage Landmark and is also recognized as an integral part of the St. Augustine Town Plan National Historic Landmark District.
