PALATKA – Arbor Day and much more is on the schedule of special events in coming weeks at Ravine Gardens.

The Arbor Day celebration begins at 10 a.m. with the Florida Forest Service and the City of Palatka. Join Forester Conrad for a planting demonstration on the second terrace of the formal garden..

Also on the schedule in coming days and weeks:

 Jan. 20 Green Thumb with – Ranger Mike who discuss how to prepare your beds to plant your spring garden. Talk with a Ravine Gardens ranger about preparing garden beds, when to start planting and much more. Meet under the large pavilion.

Feb. 10 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Air Potato Rodeo: The Air Potato Rodeo and Park Clean-Up is an annual park beautification day and resource management project held to help control the invasive air potato vine (Dioscorea Bulbifera) that is found at Ravine Gardens. Participants will assist park staff and volunteers in the collection of the potato-like tubers in efforts to control the sprouting and spread of the vine.

YOU HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE! Previous events and volunteer work has been so successful that the number of tubers is now limited. To keep this annual event going, volunteers will also be hunting down trash and other invasive exotic plants.

All ages are invited to participate. As always with this event, scout troops and other service organizations are welcome. Prizes will be awarded for various categories, such as largest potato and most golf balls found.

The first 100 volunteers who register on Eventbrite by 2/2/2017 will be guaranteed a free t-shirt when they check-in onsite for the event. Remaining shirts will be available to volunteers on a first come-first served basis during check-in on the day of the event.

A pizza lunch will be provided for all participants after the event!

Trash bags and tools will be provided. We are asking the participants to bring their own gardening gloves if possible.

Participants should wear long sleeves and pants, as well as closed-toe shoes. Participants should bring a reusable water bottle, bug spray and sunscreen.

March 3 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 4 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Azalea Days: To the end of azalea season at our historic 23rd Annual Azalea Days event! Spend the day at Ravine Gardens touring through arts and craft vendors or take a stroll through our historic gardens. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase during the event.

Saturday: This year we are adding live entertainment! The line up along with the schedule of events will be announced on the Friends of Ravine Gardens Facebook page.

Sunday: Guided Hikes will be offered at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm. They will begin at the formal gardens and travel about 1.5 miles down the terraces and over the park’s suspension bridge. For those who may have difficulty traversing the uneven terrain on the hike, ranger programs discussing the history of the park will be offered at the large pavilion at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.

Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Irma, we will not be able to provide wagon tours this year.
