Arbor Day rites: The City of St. Augustine will commemorate its 35th annual Arbor Day on Friday, Jan. 19 at Hamilton Upchurch Neighborhood Park at the intersection of Anastasia Blvd. and Red Cox Rd. The brief ceremony starts at 11am and the public is invited to attend.
Included will be the planting of trees by city officials, presentations by the Street Tree Advisory Committee (STAC) and Smokey Bear leading the distribution of free saplings to the public including Live Oak, Red Cedar, Loblolly Bay, East Palatka Holly and Red Maple.
Each year the STAC selects a location for the ceremony and the type of trees to be planted for Arbor Day. This year, three sable palms will be added to Upchurch Park. marking the 100th tree planted as part of observance of Arbor Day by the city. Since the first ceremony in 1984, trees have been planted in 23 locations throughout the city.
