Flight to Freedom 2018
Date: February 8, 9, & 10, 2018

Description: 
Many people do not know that the first underground railroad in the U.S. didn’t head north, it headed south to Florida. Slaves fleeing slavery in the Carolinas and Georgia often headed to the fortified town of Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose, now known as Fort Mose, in search of freedom.
Volunteers from Florida Living History Inc., in partnership with Fort Mose Historic State Park and the Fort Mose Historical Society, offer visitors an opportunity to look back and glimpse the journey of the people fleeing slavery. Part of Florida Living History Inc.’s educational initiatives for black history month, the annual Flight to Freedom heritage event includes “Freedom Trail” guided tours, colonial Spanish military demonstrations and period culinary demonstrations.
Cost:
Admission to the heritage event is free, but there is a museum admission fee of $2. Children 5 and under are free.
Guided Bird Walk
Date: Sunday, February 11, 2018
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Description:
Come meet the birds at Anastasia State Park on this monthly bird walk! This fun and informative walk is open to participants of all birding levels. Participants will observe a diverse variety of shore birds, marsh birds, and hammock birds by walking the beach, boardwalks, nature trails, and other areas. Please dress for the weather and bring binoculars, water, comfortable walking shoes, and a field guide if you have one. Meet at the Island Beach Shop & Grill pavilion located at the end of the main park drive. This event is weather permitting and subject to cancellation.
Cost:
Free with regular park admission fee. ($8.00 per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle. $4.00 per single-occupant vehicle. $2.00 per pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass).
Walk on the Wild Side
Date: Monday, February 12, 2018
Time: 11 a.m. – 1 a.m.
Location: Anastasia State Park, 300 Anastasia Park Road, St. Augustine, FL 32080
Description:
Join us for a fun and educational hike through Anastasia State Park with one of our experienced and knowledgeable volunteers! This walk starts out on the beautiful shoreline, continues up through the sand dunes, and travels along the boardwalk over the salt marsh. Participants will discover an assortment of flora and fauna that populate the several ecosystems of Anastasia, and they will increase their knowledge of some history of the park and the surrounding area. The round-trip length is 2.5 miles, but the walk proceeds at a leisurely pace. If a shorter distance is preferred, participants may choose to walk just the first half to Anastasia Watersports. Suggested items to bring are binoculars, comfortable walking shoes, a camera, drinking water, bug spray, and sunscreen. Meet in the beach parking lot at the end of the main park road. This event is weather permitting and subject to cancellation.

Dolphin Paddle on Salt Run

Description:
Join Anastasia Watersports and Marineland Dolphin Adventure at Anastasia State Park as we team up to offer a fun-filled interpretive paddle of Salt Run. Our estuarine tidal marsh is teeming with plant and animal life – hop into a kayak, paddle onto Salt Run, and keep an eye for birds, turtles, manatees, and especially dolphins. Anastasia Watersports staff provides illuminating details about our ecosystem and the myriad wildlife that inhabit it. Terran, our dolphin expert from Marineland, will fill you in on fascinating facts about the dolphins that are born, breed, and thrive in our waterway. The event will start with 30 minutes of classroom discussion, followed by 90 minutes of paddling. Come out and enjoy real, undiscovered Florida!
Cost:
Program fee: $40/person, includes boat rental, $25/person, provide your own boat. Park admission fees: ($8.00 per vehicle. Discovery Marsh Walk

Description:
Explore the Anastasia Marsh Trail with a park ranger, and learn about the importance of estuarine systems that surround the inshore sides of barrier islands. Hikers will travel through the maritime hammock and tidal salt marsh while discovering the plant and animal life found in these natural communities. Suggested items to bring are binoculars, comfortable walking shoes, a camera, drinking water, bug spray, and sunscreen. Meet in front of the Ranger Station. This event is weather permitting and subject to cancellation.
