SAINT AUGUSTINE – Three days of celebration the beginning of February marked the 36th anniversary of the Dedication of Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine Here.

Leading the celebration were Metropolitan Alexios and Bishop Dimitrios, with a special visit from AHEOA Supreme President Carl R. Hollister, as Great Vespers were celebrated at the St. George Street shrine on Feb. 3, followed by a gathering in the Casa Monica Hotel Flagler Ballroom.

Feb. 4 the faithful gathered for Orthros, Hierarchial Divine Liturgy, and a founders’ memorial service at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. That was followed by the 36th annual pilgrimage banquet, also at the Casa Monica, when Dr. Elizabeth H. Prodomou, Tuffs University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, delivered the keynote address.

The celebration concluded Feb. 6 with the Feast of St. Photios Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Ecclesiastical Services at the shrine.

During the celebration, His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta o named Polexeni Maouris Hillier, National Shrine Director, to be Executive Director of the Saint Photios Greek National Shrine after 12 years of service.

The St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine, an institution of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, is dedicated to the first colony of Greek people who came to America in 1768. The Shrine consists of exhibits depicting the life of early Greeks in America and the development of the Greek Orthodox Church in America, and the St. Photios Chapel.
The St. Photios Chapel is unique in the Western Hemisphere.  It is filled with exquisite Byzantine style frescoes of many apostles and saints of the Christian church.  Adding vibrant luster to these extraordinary examples of the centuries old Byzantine art is an abundant use of 22 Karat gold leaf on the highlights of the frescoes.

Called “The Jewel of St. George Street,” the St. Photios Chapel should not be missed by any visitor.  The St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine is located in historic St. Augustine, Florida, on St. George Street between Orange and Cuna Street.
