Rhythm & Ribs spicing up old town

SAINT AUGUSTINE – Barbecue to please the most discriminating taste, entertainment for all ages and lots more will be on tap April 6-8 when the Sunrise Rotary sponsors the annual Rhythm & Ribs Festival at St. Francis Field.

A Saturday feature will be the announcement of this year’s Learn to Read winner of the Kiss the Pig Contest. The individual who raises the most money will pucker up to porker Wilbur, provided by J.B. Coomes of St. Augustine for the event.

This year’s porker hopefuls include Golfers Team, Rick Ezequelle, chairman; Law Team – Patrick Canan, Seth Corneal, Jeremiah Mulligan, co-chairmen; Publix Team – Corn Hole Contest, Kathy and Jim Lobinsky, Meredith Pearson, co-chairmen; Shaughnessy’s Sports Grill Team, Heidi Eddins-Jimmerson, chairman; St. Augustine Lighthouse Team, Sid Ansbacher, chairman; and St. Johns River State College Team, Dr. Edward Jordan, Mark Breidenstein, co-chairmen.

Vote on line at or mail contributions to 70 S. Dixie Hwy., St. Augustine, 32084.

Votes are tax deductible: Per rib – $1; 1/2 slab – $50; whole slab – $100; 1/2 hog – $500; whole hog – $1,000; buy the farm – $5,000.

Barbecue vendors include Johnsons BBQ, Chesapeake, Va.; Porky n Beans, St. Lucie, Fl.; Carolina Rib King, Spartanburg, S.C.; Desperados BBQ, Hinckley, Ohio; and Camp 31 BBQ, Alabama.

Novelty foods are being provided by Crazy Good Kettle Corn, Julees Concessions, Good Ones, Sweet Corn Roasters, The Pretzel Lady and Snoballs.

The Devon Allman Project will take the stage from 8 to 10 p.m. April 6, as part of an extensive list of entertainment during the three-day celebration. Hours for this year’s festival are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 6; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 7; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday April 8.

Saturday entertainers include: Noon – Grapes of Roth; 2 p.m. – Grimes Alley; 4 p.m. – Go Get Gone; 6 p.m. – Firewater Tent Revival; 8 p.m. – The Record Company,

Sunday: Noon – Corbitt Clampitt Experience; 2:30 p.m. – The Lee Boys.

Admission to the festival for Friday and Saturday is $10 for adults with kids 15 and under free. Sunday, family day, admission is $5 for adults, and children 15 and under remain free.

Parking is available at the downtown parking facility right next to Francis Field and a free Park & Ride Shuttle will be provided on Saturday, April 1, 2017. The shuttle will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday only, and will pick up from the following locations: the St. Johns County Health Department (200 San Sebastian View), and the North San Marco Lot (301 San Marco Avenue). The shuttle will drop off at the Historic Downtown Parking Facility, which is located next to Francis Field.

Sponsors of the festival include Bozard Ford, Camping World, Canan Law, and Dunkin’ Donuts.
