Rosemary makes good ground cover

Q:    I live at the beach and would like to know if there is a type of herb that I could use as a ground cover. I would prefer something that might be fragrant. Do you have any suggestions?

A:    If the area is sunny, plant rosemary. It is drought and salt tolerant. If planted near a walkway, it will release its scent when brushed against.

Q:    I was at a nursery and saw a plant called lemon grass. Is this the same lemon grass that is used as a flavoring in cooking?

  1. It most likely is. Lemon grass sold as an herb can be used in the landscape as a perennial grass. Its blades are used in cooking to flavor teas and as a simmering scent.
