Pets, cars featured on society calendar

SAINT AUGUSTINE –  The St. Augustine Humane Society launched its eighth annual Pin Up Paws pet calendar photo contest in June to support the non-profit’s mission of promoting healthy lifelong pet ownership and reducing the rate of relinquishment to shelters.  For a chance to have a pet featured in the full color, high-quality calendar, photos of pets were submitted with heartfelt and entertaining descriptions to let people know why they should vote for the pet to be featured in the calendar for donations starting at $1 for votes. To support the calendar theme this year, “The Fast and the Furriest”, any type of car could be entered, too with help from the

St. Augustine Cruisers Car Club.

According to Carolyn Smith, executive director of the Humane Society, more than $25,400 was raised by the entries and voting efforts this year which sets a record amount for donations to the campaign since 2011. The three top winners in votes are all from St. Augustine and feature Petey Farley, a Lab mix dog that raised $2,130. Petey serves as a greeter at Castillo de San Marcos National Monument. Allistair Bazhaw, is a Yorkshire Terrier and raised $1,765, and Myrtle Ashton, a tabby cat raised $1,646.

Currently, Smith and her team are creating the calendar with first place winners to receive the coveted cover spot for the calendar and in the consecutive 12 months of pages. Runners-up will be featured throughout the pages of the calendar.

“The Fast and the Furriest” “calendar will feature the winning pets and a classic car theme while the dog or cat is fitted with accessories to match their unique personalities. For more information, call (904) 829-2737 or email Visit the contest website at
