From textiles to poetry – around the town

SAINT AUGUSTINE – The Textile Arts Guild of St. Augustine meets at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Guild Room, Suite 143, the Lightner Museum//City Hall Building, 75 King St. The regular meeting this month will be creating projects for upcoming special events.

The Textile Arts Guild will be making yarn-wrapped cardboard lambs and blanket-stitched ornaments for the annual St. Augustine Art Association Art & Craft Festival on the weekend after Thanksgiving at Francis Field in downtown St. Augustine.  Supplies will be provided for the two-hour workshop.

The second project is a Random Acts of Kindness project that will be part of Textile Symposium sponsored by Flagler College in February. For that project, members are reminded to bring knitting needles or, a crochet hook. Yarn will be provided but donations of yarn are gratefully accepted.

The Guild was founded in 1995. Its mission is two-fold: To preserve the textile arts and crafts from St. Augustine’s founding in 1565 through Statehood in 1845, and to encourage interest in the historic and contemporary arts. Prospective members are always welcome, according to President Ruth Kurlandsky.

The Guild meets monthly, September through May, on the second Thursday at 10 a.m. The guild also holds open studio gatherings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays at City Hall, Suite 143. Annual dues are $25. Prospective new members may contact the Guild at TextileArtsGuild@gmail.com, or through its Facebook page, St. Augustine Textile Arts Guild.

The October Poetry Open Mic event begins at 3 p.m. Oct. 28 at Corazon Cinema and Cafe.

All interested persons are invited.

A members-only Dark of the Moon Paranormal Tour is planned this month at the St. Augustine Lighthouse.

Members may choose from one of two dates: Thursday, Oct. 18, 7:30 p.m.; and Thursday, Oct. 25, 7:30 p.m.

Space is limited. RSVP to Jennifer, 904-827-0745, ext. 220 or email jthompson@staugustinelighthouse.org.

Due to safety issues, only a certain number of guests will be accepted for each tour.

The next membership-only Dark of the Moon Tour is planned in June.
