Horse judging teams earn state honors

SAINT AUGUSTINE – Congratulations to the St. Johns County 4-H Horse Judging Teams who competed on Feb. 9 at the Tampa State Fair Horse Judging Competition. Youth judged conformation classes that included Tennessee Walking Horses, Hunters, Quarter Horses and Paints/Stock Type and performance classes for Hunter Under Saddle, Plantation Pleasure (TWH), Hunt Seat Equitation and Ranch Riding.

Competing against 10 other teams, the St. Johns County 4-H Senior Team took first place.  Team members included Taylor Garns, Dana Kusch and Amber Carlton. Taylor Garns placed first individual, Dana Kusch placed fourth individual and Amber Carlton placed sixth individual.  The St. Johns County 4-H Intermediate Team earned fifth place. Team members included Mia Clyce, Maci Cerasale, Sean Merriam and Olivia Migiano. Maci Cerasale placed fifth individual overall. Team members Hunter Jones and Addison Cerasale also attended to give support to competing team members and to experience the event.  The future is bright for these accomplished and rising teams of 4-H equestrian enthusiast!

4-H Alumni Paige Merriam, 4-H Program Assistant Kellie Anderson and 4-H volunteer Brittany Holmes have been coaching the teams in preparation for the state fair horse judging contest for the last four months. The Tampa State Fair Horse Judging Contest is put on by the University of Florida Animal Science Department to provide 4-H and FFA youth an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and ability in the selection and evaluation of different horse breeds.

If you would like to see the St. Johns County 4-H youth in action, please plan to attend the St. Johns County 4-H Demonstration Night on Tuesday, March 26th at 6pm at the St. Johns County Extension Office (3125 Agricultural Center Drive, St. Augustine, FL 32092), This event will consist of 4-H youth project demonstrations/illustrated talks and is open to the public.
