It’s National Night Out 2019 today and a chance for communities and law enforcement to interact and build safe communities. School fun, safety tips and games are planned at gatherings in Putnam, Flagler and St. Johns counties. St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and county government will host their celebration from 5-8 p.m. at St. Johns County Beach Pier at St. Augustine Beach. In Flagler County the Sheriff’s Office is hosting the event at Flagler Palm Coast High School from 6 to 8 p.m. In Putnam County the Palatka Police Department sponsors the event at Booker Park, 701 N. 10th Street in Palatka from 6 to 8 p.m. In Palatka back-to-school back packs and a school supply giveaway are planned.

With opening day of school less than a week away, Flagler County School Board meets in special session today to review the search for a new superintendent and then follows that with a workshop. Both meetings are at the Government  Services Building in Bunnell. They’re not displeased with Superintendent James Tager, he’s led them back to an A-rated school district; but he is set to retire next year. Putnam County School Board holds its regular meeting at 3:30 p.m. today at the school administration building on Reid Street. They’ll be getting an update on school preparations.

A 49-year-old Palatka woman was jailed after a domestic disturbance event that included an attack on a 68-year-old family member Sunday at a Millican Road residence. Wendy Carol Feagin faces charges in the altercation that apparently began as an argument over a 5-year-old. It escalated with the grandmother being punched in the face and scratched and bitten, according to the report. The grandmother began choking the suspect and the physical fight ended. It escalated again when Feagin reportedly got out a shotgun and pointed it at the grandmother, who then got out a locked up pistol. The two separated before Putnam county deputies arrived.

Three workers were injured at a building site accident in Flagler County Saturday. A wooden wall 30 feet long and 12 feet high was being lifted into place by nine workers at a Hammock building site when the wall fell. Ronald Montagna, 48, and Nathaniel Schmidt, 34, both of Palm Coast were taken to hospitals. Montagna had serious injuries.

St. Augustine Beach commissioners have banned plastic bags, plastic straws and Styrofoam this year. Now they’ve added cigarette butts and other tobacco products to their anti-litter ordinance. It’s a partnership with Beaches Go Green and part of a move by beach towns including Neptune and Atlantic Beaches in Duval County to clean up. Monday St. Augustine Beach added the ban but will hold a town hall meeting Aug. 29 to tell people about that as well as discuss again parking fees and the public budget.
