Ficus is dropping its leaves

Q:   I have a 10-foot variegated ficus tree in an atrium. Some of the leaves are falling. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

A:   If you see new growth emerging on your ficus tree, then the leaf drop is normal and there is no need for concern.

Q:   I want to start an avocado pit in water. I know you suspend it over a jar of water by inserting toothpicks into it. Which end goes up?

  1. A. The pointed end is normally placed upward. Set it deep enough in the water to prevent drying out. Once the true leaves form, the second set of leaves, the pit can be planted in soil.
