How to grow blueberries

Q:  I want to grow some blueberries. What do they need to grow well?

 A:    Blueberries need an acidic soil. Unless the pH of your soil is naturally 5.5 or less, do not expect the plants to bloom well. They need moist but not wet soil and need full sun.

Q: While at the store, I looked in the nursery section and saw some apple trees. They had “Granny Smith” and “Golden Delicious”. Will these varieties grow here?

A:    You may be able to get them to grow here but it is not likely that these varieties will produce much fruit here. They need more winter cold than we get to fruit heavily.
